SAMA KNOWLEDGE IS POWER LUNCHEON A HUGE SUCCESS

On March 6, the SAMA Foundation held the first annual Knowledge is Power to educate families, researchers, social service providers and other community members about the disease of youth substance addiction.  A sold-out crowd of 500 attended the event, which supports SAMA's youth and family support programs and the development of a newly announcedTreatment Research Institute focusing on youth substance addiction.

Keynote speaker Dr. Nora Volkow, M.D., Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, shared the latest research about youth substance addiction and the importance of community awareness about the disease.  Jean Enersen of KING5 TV emceed the event.

JANUARY PARENT INFORMATION FORUM A SUCCESS

More than 60 concerned parents of adolescents and young adults participated in an evening of learning and discussion about adolescent substance use on January 31.  The SAMA Foundation, in partnership with Seattle Public Schools Prevention & Intervention Programs and Seattle Central Community College, hosted the second Parent Information Forum, Parents—Are You Concerned About Your Teen’s Alcohol or Other Drug Use?  Attendees explored the following topics:

  •  Adolescent brain development and the effects of alcohol and other drugs on the growing brain.
  • How to communicate concerns about substance use to your son or daughter, and how to get support for yourself and your youth. 
  • Tips to help your son or daughter engage in youth and family treatment.

Speakers included SAMA founder Dr. Bob Day, SAMA Family Navigator Frank Couch, CDP, and Trez Buckland, M.Ed., Clinical Faculty & Project Coordinator, Integrative Health Program, UW School of Nursing and the parent of two young adults in recovery. The event was emceed by SAMA board member and community leader Bowen Peck.

SAMA PARENT INFORMATION FORUM MARCH 6, 2008 in SAMMAMISH

The SAMA Foundation, in partnership with the Skyline High School PTSA, will host a Parent Information Forum, Parents—Are You Concerned About Your Teen’s Alcohol or Other Drug Use? on Thursday, March 6 from 7-9 pm at Pine Lake Covenant Church, 1715 228th Ave. SE, Sammamish, WA.

Attendees will explore the following topics:

  •  Adolescent brain development and the effects of alcohol and other drugs on the growing brain.
  • How to communicate concerns about substance use to your son or daughter, and how to get support for yourself and your youth. 
  • Tips to help your son or daughter engage in youth and family treatment.
